Hey all, this is a bit of a request. I've become a bit of a technical spokesperson for Tucows Inc, and I kind of want to get out to interesting things around the city a little more. It'll help give me ideas and broaden my knowledge in general. I've always wanted to check out some of the cool nights, but now I'm really kicking myself To Do It, damnit.
Can anyone suggest to me (and other surfers) what are some good social technology/geek/code nights in Toronto? I'd like to get out to ones that have a seminar each gathering around a certain topic, maybe even ones in an office where we can practice or be taught on computers, just anything that's fun, really.
I'm mostly interested in Ruby (even On Rails), MySQL setup and maint, shell use and scripting (esp. bash and tcsh), content management, writing/doc systems, project management, Windows/Mac/Linux system info and maint, something cool and techy, or anything you think might be snazzy. Anything demoscene or tracking/.MOD related would be especially cool to know about, as a different taste...
Individual evenings or pages that list events are welcome, though I really want what YOU think is cool and have been to. If you're involved with the night itself, and could use some nice conversational music to be DJ'd, give me a shout -- all I need to bring is my laptop and my DJ controller.

I assume guys have a local dorkbot movement. We've had a few here in Melbourne. http://dorkbot.org/dorkbottoronto/ (there we go!) I guess it's often hardware based but it's still great fun to go along and see what people do. I know I've met a couple of demoscene crew at those meets to.
On tracking front, I just played a live gig with 2 x Commodore Amiga's - over an hours worth of original MOD's (1993 - 2009) and recorded the set too! Enjoy :-) http://www.syntaxparty.org/ctrix Re: Tech/geek/code social nights in Toronto?

About 2 months late. But if you're still looking then http://yousayyeah.com/calendar/ is a pretty good place to check out what's going on.
There's the whole BarCamp scene to watch too - DemoCamps can be a good place to get together with the web app crowd. Plus Ruby Fringe and surrounding events for Ruby stuff (I think, I'm not a Ruby guy). Re: Tech/geek/code social nights in Toronto?

Heya Andrew, not sure what the timeline is like, but the TOJam (game jam) runs regularly, and I believe the Toronto IGDA chapter is still active, possibly running monthly meetings.

Hello Andrew,
May I suggest TLUG (TORONTO LINUX USERS GROUP), generally a good place to learn about all things Linux. (In my humble opinion, the only way to compute). Sure, they have a few assholes among members, but generally they are cool. Try 'em. tlug.ss.org Ib Khider Re: Re: Tech/geek/code social nights in Toronto?

Hey Andrew,
Late to the party, but there is the HackLab unpatched Tuesdays. To quote: Every Tuesday from 6(ish) to late in the evening we have an “open lab” night. It has varied between a mostly social event and a productive work party depending on what people are up to, but the key thing about it is that the door is open to all comers. |
